If you are on Twitter and Instagram, you probably have ran into the homie from Palmdale –> @Chicano_Soul aka Art Meza. Art is originally from Boyle Heights and currently works at the Cypress Park Library. Many of you know him because we have posted announcements of many of the events the library has hosted, including the amazing ¡Ban This! event with Xicano author and indie publisher Santino Rivera.
He recently took up photography with his iPod Touch or other and began capturing the beauty and elegance of the Los Angeles lowrider scene. What began as a simple once-in-a-while hobby has now become a passion for detailing not only the smooth angles and vibrant colors of the automobile, but for its appreciation of the history of the lowrider scene.
Art has now upgraded to a professional Nikon camera, and his photographic work is like no other, especially because Art uses the unique Chicano aesthetic art of photography that began in the 1960s. Art just finished hosting his first exhibit at Mi Vida Boutique in Highland Park that was an invitation to the community to appreciate the lowrider scene as a form of community empowerment.
Art’s photography will be central to an upcoming book: Lowriting: Shots, Rides, & Stories from the Chicano Soul! that is scheduled to be published later this year by Broken Sword Publications.
